Women's Basketball Downs Husson
Nov. 7, 2008
ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's basketball team built an early lead on the Husson University Eagles and cruised to a 79-38 exhibition win. The Black Bears were led by freshman Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) who had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Maine's defensive pressure caused problems for the Husson offense early. The Eagles forced poor passes and allowed two steals by Kristen Baker (Bingham, Maine) that resulted in four points for the Black Bears. Husson had seven turnovers in the first seven minutes. Maine ran an efficient offense that shot 58 percent from the field in the first half. Baker and freshman Jasmine Rush (Houston, Texas) attacked the hoop to create passing lanes that allowed Brittany Boser (Palmer, Mass.) and Baranowski to convert easy finishes. Boser and Baranowski combined for 16 first half points. In the second half the Black Bears kept their foot on the gas, increasing their lead to as many as 38 points. Maine hustled on both ends of the court throughout and finished with a 52 percent shooting percentage as they continued to work the ball inside instead of settling for outside shots. Baranowski picked up 10 second half points to finish with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Baker added seven points, eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Amanda Tewksbury (Clinton, N.J.) had nine points and three rebounds. Katia Bratishko (Annadale, Va.) hustled her way to eight points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Boser finished with 10 points. The Black Bears out-rebounded Husson by a 53-to-32 margin. Maine kicks off the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 16, when they travel to North Carolina to take on Duke University at 12 p.m..
