Women's Basketball Falls to Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - The University of Maine women's basketball team opened its 2008-09 season with a 98-31 loss to No. 8 Duke, on Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. Maine fell to 0-1 on the season, while Duke improved to 2-0. Freshman center Samantha Baranowski paced Maine with a team-high nine points. It marked the second-straight season a freshman led the Black Bears in scoring in the season opener. Tanna Ross paced the Black Bears with 14 points in last year's season-opener at Clemson. It marked the second-straight season Maine opened the year at an ACC opponent. Junior guard Amanda Tewksbury and freshman backcourt mate Jasmine Rush chipped in seven points each. Baranowski and Rush were joined by freshman guard Brittany Williams in making their collegiate debuts for the Black Bears. The Black Bears got 20 points from freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore guard Tanna Ross also netted four points. Chante Black led the Blue Devils with a game-high 16 points, while Crystal Thomas came off the bench to net 13 points and 10 rebounds. Duke raced out to a 12-1 lead a few minutes into the contest and built a 47-12 advantage at halftime.
Maine returns to action Thursday when the Black Bears travel to face Central Connecticut State at 7 p.m. The Black Bears will play in front of the home state fans next Sunday when they play host to Massachusetts at 2 p.m., at the Augusta Civic Center.
