Women's Basketball Falls to Quinnipiac

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 70-49 decision to Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon in the consolation of the 2007 Dead River Company Classic at Alfond Arena in Orono. Maine fell to 1-4 on the season, while the Bobcats improved to 2-1. Brittany Boser led the way for Maine with a career-high 19 points. It marked her second-straight double-figure scoring game. Boser was named to the Classic's All-Tournament team, as she averaged 14.5 points per game over the two games in the event. Freshman guard Tanna Ross chipped in with eight points and five rebounds, while Colleen Kilmurray notched six points and six boards. Mandy Pennewell tallied a team-high 19 points for Quinnipiac, while Erin Kerner added 17. The Bobcats shot 48 percent (27-of-56) from the floor, while Maine managed to convert just 25 percent (12-of-48) of its attempts. A pair of free throws by Boser gave Maine an early 2-0 lead, but Quinnipiac scored the next seven points and would not trail the rest of the way in picking up the win. Boser led Maine with 13 points in the first half. The Black Bears outrebounded an opponent for the second-straight game as they held a 37-32 advantage on the boards over Quinnipiac. The game marked Maine's last home contest at Alfond Arena until Jan. 5, when the Black Bears open their America East schedule with a 7 p.m. tipoff versus defending conference champion UMBC. Harvard was crowned champions of the Dead River Company Classic as it knocked off Hofstra, 63-56, in the championship game later in the evening.
