Women's Basketball Falls to Brown

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's basketball team fell to Brown by the score of 65-52 on Friday evening at the Alfond Arena. With the loss, Maine falls to 1-3 on the season while Brown improves to 1-4. Maine was led by Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) who had 15 points and five rebounds. The Black Bears fell behind early 12-8, but scored the next five points courtesy of a three-pointer from Colleen Kilmurray (Wall, N.J.) and a layup from Brittany Boser (Palmer, Mass.). Brown went on a run, and took a 23-13 lead before Maine went on a 7-to-2 run to cut the lead to five. Brown then went on another run to take a 30-21 lead into halftime. Maine was led in the first half by Baranowski who had six points and two rebounds. Amanda Tewksbury (Clinton, N.J.) had five points and three rebounds to go along with a block in the first stanza. Brown shot 45 percent from the field while Maine shot 33 percent in the first stanza. In the second half, the Black Bears closed the lead to one point at 36-35 as they went on a 14-to-6 run to open the half. Baranowski had nine points during the stretch. The teams traded baskets, and Brown was clinging to a one-point lead at 41-40 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. Brown went on a run to expand its lead, and Maine kept fighting back but could not quite get the shots to fall and the Black Bears ran out of time. Samantha Wheeler (Derry, N.H.) finished with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals while Kristin Baker (Bingham, Maine) finished with six assists. Sadiea Williams led the Brown Bears with 16 points and seven rebounds. For the game, Brown outrebounded Maine by a 37-to-33 margin. Brown made 47 percent of its field goals while Maine shot 34 percent from the field.
Maine plays NJIT tomorrow in the consolation round of the Dead River Company Classic at 1 p.m.
