Women's Basketball Drops Tough 63-62 Decision to William & Mary
Nov. 29, 2007 WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a tough 63-62 decision to William & Mary on Thursday night at Kaplan Arena in Williamsburg, Va. The Black Bears fell to 1-5 with the setback, while W&M improved to 3-3. Sophomore guard Amanda Tewksbury poured in a career-high 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. It marked the first time this season she led the team in scoring. Sophomore forward Brittany Boser scored 14 points and pulled down four rebounds in the contest. Devin James led the Tribe with 16 points, while Tiffany Benson and Kara Kaylor each chipped in 12 points. Kaylor had a double-double as she also pulled down 11 rebounds. William & Mary pulled out the win with three seconds remaining on a free throw by Benson to break the 62-62 tie and lift the Tribe to the win. The Black Bears had tied it at 62 just 30 seconds prior on a jumper by Tewksbury. The Tribe out-rebounded Maine by a 37-30 count, including pulling down 20 offensive rebounds. However, the Black Bears owned an 11-10 advantage in second chance points. Maine raced out to a 6-0 lead three minutes into the contest, but W&M responded with nine-straight points. From there, the rest of the first half went back-and-forth. The Tribe held an 18-12 edge midway through the first half, but the Black Bears answered by scoring 11 of the next 13 points to grab a 23-20 lead with 6:17 remaining. The Black Bears led the rest of the half, but their lead never grew larger than four points during the stretch. Maine held a slim 32-31 edge heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Black Bears raced out to a 48-40 lead - its largest of the game -- on a Kristin Baker layup with 11:19 remaining in the contest. However, William & Mary scored 10 straight points to go up 50-48. The lead would change hands six times before the final 30 seconds of the contest.
