Women's Basketball Falls to NJIT in Dead River Company Classic Consolation Game

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team fell to New Jersey Institute of Technology 68-60 in the consolation game of the Dead River Company Classic on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Brittany Boser (Palmer, Mass.) led the Black Bears with 16 points in the game, while rookie Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) chipped in with 13 points.

NJIT jumped out to a 15-5 lead just over seven minutes into the game. Maine responded with a 13-0 run to take an 18-15 lead just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. The run was highlighted by eight straight points by Boser. The two teams continued to battle before NJIT ended the half on a 9-3 run. Kehinde Oyelola had four points for NJIT during the run. The Highlanders took a 33-28 lead into halftime.

NJIT extended its lead to 40-28 with a layup by Jessica Gerald just over three minutes into the half. Maine was able to cut the lead to seven points at 42-35 with a layup by Baranowski with just over 14:40 remaining in the game. NJIT then extended the lead to 12 points with 12:30 remaining.

The Black Bears made a run and cut the lead to just five points at 56-51 with 3:20 remaining in the contest on a pair of Kristin Baker (Bingham, Maine) free throws. NJIT responded with a three-point field goal by Jessica Gerald with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Maine would cut it to five points with 1:30 remaining, but that is as close as the Black Bears would get.

Boser led Maine with 16 points, while Baranowski added 13. All nine Maine players recorded at least four points in the game. Colleen Kilmurray (Wall, N.J.) and Tanna Ross (Newburgh, Maine) each pulled down six rebounds.

 

 

NJIT was led by Jessica Gerald who had 26 points. She hit 14-of-16 shots from the free thrown line.

The Black Bears continue their homestand when they host Robert Morris on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at Alfond Arena in Orono.
