Women's Basketball Falls at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a tough 68-56 decision to Boston College on Saturday afternoon at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The Black Bears dropped to 2-9 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 9-3.

Freshman guard Tanna Ross led Maine with 17 points, including five three-pointers, marking the second time in the last four games she has made at least five treys. Emily Rousseau added 11 points and Sandra Vaitkute chipped in nine for the Black Bears in the contest.

Stefanie Murphy paced BC with 21 points, while Ayla Brown added 11 points.

Boston College opened the game on a 12-0 run, but Maine responded by scoring 19 of the contest's next 25 points to take a 19-18 lead with 8:13 to go until halftime. The run was aided by a pair of three-pointers from Ross, six points from Colleen Kilmurray and five from Rousseau.

The Black Bears led by as many as seven the rest of the half in building a 36-33 lead at halftime. Ross had 14 points in the opening 20 minutes, while Rousseau added 10.

Coming out of halftime Boston College outscored Maine 15-7 in the opening six minutes of the second half to take a 48-43 lead.

A layup by Murphy and a three-pointer from Brown ensued for Boston College following a timeout to push its lead to 53-43 with 12:23 remaining in the contest.

The Eagles led by as many as 20 points the rest of the way in earning the win.

The Black Bears return to action next Saturday when they face Miami in the opening round of the Hurricane Holiday Classic in Coral Gables, Fla. The game will tip off at 5 p.m.
