Women's Basketball Drops Game to Toledo

Dec. 30, 2007

Box Score

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a tough 61-57 decision to Toledo Sunday night in the championship game of the 2007 Hurricane Holiday Classic at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Black Bears dipped to 3-10 on the season, while Toledo improved to 6-5. Maine advanced to the tournament's championship on Saturday with a 54-53 win over host-school Miami. The Rockets used a 63-57 victory over Central Arkansas the previous day to earn a spot in the final two.

Brittany Boser and Emily Rousseau each tossed in a game-high 16 points to pace the Black Bears, while Amanda Tewksbury added 13. Rousseau and Tewksbury were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts. Rousseau averaged 14.0 points in the two-game tournament, while Tewksbury posted 12.0 points per game.

Allie Clifton paced Toledo with 14 points, while Lisa Johnson notched 12 points.

Maine held a 41-38 lead with 10:54 remaining in the contest after Rousseau converted a layup. However, Toledo scored the next six points, sparked by a Tamesha Scotton layup, to go up 44-41 with 7:43 to go.

Rousseau answered with a three to notch the score at 44-44, but the Rockets made back-to-back baskets on their next two possessions to take a 48-44 edge. Toledo never trailed the rest of the way in pulling out the win.

The Rockets raced out to an 8-2 lead a little over two minutes into the contest. Toledo led for most of the first half in building a 30-23 advantage at halftime.

The Black Bears opened the first four minutes of the second half by going on a 10-0 run to take a 33-30 lead. Boser sparked the surge by knocking down a jumper and laying in a basket.

The game went back and forth the next few minutes before Toledo used the final 10 minutes of the contest to pull away for the win.

Maine returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to UMBC in the America East opener for both teams. The game will tip off at 7 p.m., at Alfond Arena in Orono. Tickets still remain for the contest and can be purchased by calling 581-BEAR or toll-free at (800) 756-TEAM.
