Ashley Underwood Named America East Player of the Week
Feb. 12, 2007 ORONO, Maine - Senior guard Ashley Underwood (Benton, Maine) was named the America East Player of the Week on Monday for her performance in a pair of Maine women's basketball victories last week. It marks the first such honor of her career and the second for a Black Bear this season. Underwood averaged 24.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in the Black Bears' wins over Albany (71-63 on Wednesday) and Binghamton (59-56 on Saturday) last week. She scored a career-high 30 points in the victory over the Great Danes, while going 14-for-14 from the free throw line and tying a school-record for free throw percentage in a game at 1.000 (min. 10 free throws made). It marked the second time this season she tied the mark, as she also went 11-for-11 from the charity stripe in Maine's 79-63 win over Northwestern State back on Dec. 29 in the Cavalier Classic. She followed up her career-high performance on Saturday with a game-high 19 points and five rebounds in the victory over the Bearcats. Underwood has led Maine in scoring in each of the last three games and has scored at least 21 points in two of those contests. She is averaging 23.3 points per game during that span. Underwood ranks fourth in America East in scoring with an average of 14.6 points per outing. Her average of 16.7 points per America East contest ranks second in the league. Underwood joins classmate Bracey Barker as the two Black Bears to garner the conference's weekly award this season. Barker earned the award on Nov. 13, after she scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds in Maine's season-opening 66-46 win over William & Mary.
The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Vermont at 7:30 p.m. in Alfond Arena. Maine enters the contest with a 12-10 overall record and a 6-5 mark in America East play, which put the Black Bears a half-game ahead of the Catamounts (15-8, 5-5 AE) for sole possession of third place in the league.
