March 7, 2005

BOSTON - Senior guard and captain Missy Traversi (Attleboro, Mass.) of the University of Maine women's basketball team was named America East Player of the Week on Monday, earning the honor for the first time. She garners the award after scoring in double-digits in back-to-back wins this past week. Traversi scored 21 points in a 76-59 win at Stony Brook on Wednesday night, and added 19 points in Saturday's 63-55 win over UMBC.

Against Stony Brook, Traversi was 8-of-15 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds, had two steals, and added an assist. On senior recognition night in her regular season home finale versus UMBC, Traversi led all scorers with 19 points, pulled down four rebounds, dished out six assists and added a steal. In both games, Traversi shot over 50.0 percent from the floor, hit four 3-pointers (combined 8-15 from behind-the-arc) and was 6-8 from the foul-line. Traversi extends her double-figure scoring streak to 13 games heading into the America East playoffs in Hartford, Connecticut.

In all contests this season, Traversi leads the Black Bears in scoring, averaging 13.6 points, five points above her 2003-04 average. Traversi leads the league in assist/turnover ratio (2.00), and ranks in the league's top 10 in scoring (13.6 ppg), assists (3.18 per game), and 3-point field goals made (30).

Traversi and Francesca Vanin of Northeastern share the Wilson Player of the Week honors.

Maine returns to the hardwood on March 10, playing in the quarter-finals of the 2005 Friendship Cottage Cheese America East women's basketball championship tournament. Maine will play the winner of the Stony Brook / Boston University game. Tipoff at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavillion is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
