Women's Basketball to Celebrate 2006-07 Season on April 21

April 2, 2007

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's basketball team will celebrate the 2006-07 season, which featured several highlights, on Saturday, April 21, with a pair of events. The day will begin with a free instructional clinic for youths from grades 5-8 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Memorial Gym. The day will conclude with the annual team banquet at 6 p.m. in Stodder Hall Commons on College Avenue in Orono.

The clinics will be broken up for the different age groups and will focus on individual drills (offense and defense) that players can utilize on their own free time to improve their skills. The clinics will be conducted by the coaching staff and Black Bear women's basketball players. The clinics are open for individuals or for whole teams to attend. Youths wishing to attend the clinics must RSVP to reserve a spot. For more information or to RSVP, please contact assistant coach Aliya Cox at (207) 581-3094 or email her at Aliya.Cox@umit.maine.edu(.)

The annual year-in-review banquet will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour. The dinner and awards ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature the awarding of several individual awards and serving as a final salute to the 2007 senior class, which featured Bracey Barker (Bar Harbor, Maine), Ashley Underwood (Benton, Maine), Katie Whittier (New Gloucester, Maine) and Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa (Apple Valley, Minn.). There were several highlights during the 2006-07 season, including Maine finishing in a tie for fourth place in America East after the Black Bears were tabbed to finish seventh in the coaches preseason poll. Barker and Underwood each topped 1,000 points for their careers in the same game in Maine's 74-66 triumph at eventual conference champion UMBC on Jan. 24. Barker was named to the All-America East First-Team, while Underwood was selected to the all-league second-team. Both were named to the America East Women's Basketball All-Academic Team, making Maine the only school in the league to have multiple players named to the prestigious list. Whittier was named to the Cavalier Classic All-Tournament Team back on Dec. 29 after she helped lead Maine to a 1-1 record in the tournament. Also in the tournament, Hugstad-Vaa netted a career-high 17 points in helping to lead Maine to a victory over Northwestern State.

Tickets are $30 and must be purchased by April 16. For more information on the banquet or to purchase tickets, please call the Maine women's basketball office at (207) 581-1107.
