Field Hockey defeats Sacred Heart

STORRS, Conn.--The University of Maine field hockey team defeated Sacred Heart 2-1 in the regular season opener for the Black Bears at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Maine improved to 1-0 on the season while Sacred Heart fell to 0-2. Maine was led by freshman Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) who scored two goals. The Black Bears got on the board 10 minutes into the second half when Newton released a quick shot that beat Sacred Heart goalie Whitney Mills (Harrisburg, Pa.) Sacred Heart would get on the board six minutes later when Carisa Eye (Nesconset, N.Y.) scored off a feed from Dana Luhrs (Milford, Pa.) The tie would be short lived as Newton scored again at the 57 minute mark via another quick shot to give the Black Bears a lead they would not relinquish. The Black Bears dominated from start to finish, ending up with a 23-9 advantage in shots. The Black Bear defense limited Sacred Heart to three shots on net. Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) made two saves in net for Maine while Mills made 11 saves for Sacred Heart. Maine returns to action Monday as the Black Bears take on the number four-ranked Connecticut Huskies at noon.
