Spencer Leads Maine Past Dartmouth in Double Overtime
Sept. 14, 2004 ORONO, Maine-- Kasey Spencer (Old Town, Maine) scored the game-winning goal with 1:43 remaining in the second overtime as the University of Maine field hockey team downed Dartmouth College 2-1 on a chilly Tuesday afternoon in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 5-2 on the season with the win, while Dartmouth falls to 1-3. Spencer had her initial shot stopped by Dartmouth goalkeeper Lauren Balukjian before she was able to beat her for the game-winner. For Spencer, it was her second goal of the season and second game-winner. Katie Flaherty (Winslow, Maine) picked up an assist on the tally. Dartmouth jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half when Audrey Knutson notched her second goal of the season at 24:59. The Big Green held the lead until Rachael Hilgar (Barto, Pa.) tied the game at 40:29. Joanna Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario) found Hilgar in front of the cage for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The game remained tied the rest of regulation and through the first overtime before Spencer ended it late in the second overtime. All four of Maine's home games this season have gone to overtime. The Black Bears are 2-2 in overtime. Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) made nine saves in goal for the Black Bears and improves to 5-2 on the season. Balukjian made 11 saves for the Big Green and falls to 1-3. The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, September 18 when they travel to Harvard for a 2 p.m. tilt.
