Field Hockey Downs Quinnipiac 3-2

HAMDEN, Conn.-- The University of Maine field hockey team extended its winning streak to three games with a 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon in Hamden, Conn. The Black Bears improve to 3-4 on the season with the victory. Amy Zdrojesky (East Greenville, Pa.) led Maine with a goal and an assist in the win.

Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) opened the scoring for the Black Bears 15:20 into the game when she scored off a corner from Zdrojesky. Quinnipiac, who falls to 1-5 on the season, tied the score just over seven minutes later when Ann Marie Mangano scored an unassisted goal off a rebound from the left side.

Maine took the lead for good when Zdrojesky scored from the top of the arc off a penalty corner at 39:47. Erin Reusch (Salem. N.H.) gave Maine a 3-1 lead at 52:15 when she scored off a rebound. For Reusch, it was her second goal of the weekend as she also tallied a goal on Saturday at Brown.

Quinnipiac rounded out the scoring with less than three minutes to go in the game when Megan Sciascia fed Mangano from the right side. Mangano beat Maine goalie Maygan Cassarino (Milford, N.H.).

Maine held an 18-16 advantage in shots. The Black Bears had an 11-8 edge in penalty corners.

Cassarino made eight saves in the game and improves to 1-2 on the season. Jenna Grossman stopped six shots for Quinnipiac.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, September 22 when they host Rhode Island at 11 a.m. in the start of a three-game home stand. Maine then hosts Providence on Sunday, September 23 at 12 noon.
