Field Hockey Falls to UMass 1-0

Sept. 19, 2004

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass.- The University of Maine field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to UMass on Sunday afternoon in Amherst, Mass. The Black Bears, who entered the game riding a four-game winning streak, fall to 6-3 on the season, while the Minutewomen improve to 1-6 on the season with the win.

UMass junior Patricia Borneo scored an unassisted goal with just 4:30 remaining in regulation to give the Minutewomen the win. Marije Tigchelaar had the ball deep in the Maine zone. Her pass intended for Borneo was intercepted by a Maine defender. As the defender tried to clear it, Borneo knocked the ball down, set it and fired a shot that beat Maine goalkeeper Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine).

Neither team had many scoring chances in the first half, but the second half was a different story. With 28:39 remaining, Maine had three chances to break the scoreless tie off a corner. Meagan Connolly (Mahopac, N.Y.) took the first shot and it was saved by UMass goalie Christine Tocco. Rachael Hilgar (Barto, Pa.) then had two consecutive opportunities. Her first attempt was saved by Tocco and then the second one was blocked by a UMass defender.

The Black Bears had another great chance with just over 12 minutes left. Kasey Spencer (Old Town, Maine) sent a cross pass into the middle of the circle to Amie Dubois (Winslow, Maine). Dubois tried to flick it past Tocco on the left side, but Tocco made a sprawling save.

Maine outshot UMass 15-7 in the game. Morin made one save in goal for Maine and falls to 6-3 on the season. Tocco made eight saves for the Minutewomen.

The Black Bears return to action on Friday, September 24 when they host UMBC at 5:00 p.m. for their first America East game of the season. For more information on Maine field hockey or Black Bear athletics, visit www.GoBlackBear.com.
