Field Hockey Falls to Quinnipiac
Sept. 21, 2008
ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine field hockey team fell to Quinnipiac University by the score of 4-2 at the Maine Field Hockey Complex on Sunday afternoon. Maine fell to 3-4 on the season while Quinnipiac went to 2-5. Maine was led by Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) and Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) who each had a goal. The Black Bears fell behind in the ninth minute on a goal by Mackenzie Liptak (Schuylerville, N.Y.), but would tie it up five minutes later when Mitchell was in front of the Quinnipiac net and knocked in a rebound to knot the game at one. Quinnipiac would score another goal to take a 2-1 lead, but Gardiner would tie it up two minutes before halftime. Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) took a shot but got under it, and lofted the ball in the air. The ball went right to Gardiner who put it in the cage for her fourth goal of the season. The Bobcats would score two more in the second half to put the game just out of reach of the Black Bears. Maine outshot Quinnipiac by a 21-to-16 margin. Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) made nine saves in net for Maine while Jenna Grossman (Flanders, N.J.) made 11 for Quinnipiac. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday when they travel to Providence for a 1 p.m. game.
