Field Hockey Falls to Albany In America East Opener

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine field hockey team fell to Albany 3-0 on a cool Friday evening at Morse Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears fall to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in America East play. Albany, ranked 17th in the latest NFHCA Poll, improves to 8-3, 1-0 in conference play.

Albany took a 1-0 lead 21:45 into the game when Nicole Savage scored off a scramble in front of the goal cage. For Savage, it was her eighth goal of the season. Michelle Simpson added an assist on the goal.

The Great Danes added to their lead at 62:20 when Michele Polizois scored from Anouk Vandenbert and Jess Lindsey off a penalty corner. Albany added a third goal just 1:13 later when Simpson added a goal of her own off a tipped shot from Sam Daly.

The teams finished with 12 shots apiece. Albany had a 7-5 advantage in the first half, while Maine had a 7-5 edge in the second half.

Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) made five saves in the game. Ashley Ross made seven saves for Albany.

Amy Zdrojesky (East Greenville, Pa.) led Maine with six shots in the game.

Maine returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 when it traves to Boston College for a 3 p.m. game.
