Field Hockey Falls to Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The University of Maine field hockey team dropped a tough decision at Providence College by the score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Maine falls to 3-5 on the season while Providence improved to 6-4. Maine was led by Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) who had a goal and an assist. Maine fell behind two minutes into the game when the Friars' Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) scored on a tip-in. The Friars would take a two-goal lead four minutes later on a Jaime Lipski (Dallas, Pa.) goal. Maine fought back, and cut the lead in half less than a minute later when Gardiner notched her fifth goal of the season off a pass from reigning America East Rookie of the Week, Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia). The Friars got a two-goal lead back at the 12-minute mark, but the Black Bears came back as Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) notched her third goal of the season less than a minute before halftime to cut the lead to 3-2. In the second half, Providence scored three unanswered goals before Kallie Aldus (Belfast, Maine) scored with less than five minutes to go to make it a 6-3 game. Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) made three saves in net for Maine. Poulin notched two goals to lead the Friars. The Black Bears return to action on Saturday when they play their first America East game of the season at Albany at 1 p.m.
