Fernandes, Saucier Lead Maine Past UNH 3-1

ORONO, Maine-- Joanna Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario) and Shaunessy Saucier (Old Town, Maine) each scored a goal and added an assist to lead the 17th ranked University of Maine field hockey team past UNH 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in America East play, while the Wildcats fall to 1-9, 0-2 in conference play.

The Black Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 2:16 into the game when Saucier notched her third goal of the season from Meagan Connolly (Mahopac, N.Y.).

Maine added to its lead at the end of the first half when they were awarded a penalty corner as time expired. Amie Dubois (Winslow, Maine) beat UNH goalkeeper Christine Buckley with no time remaining in the half. Fernandes registered an assist on the goal.

UNH pulled to within one goal at 55:50 when Caitlin Gillen scored her fourth of the season on a scramble in front of the Maine cage.

Maine regained the two-goal lead minutes later it scored on the second penalty corner of the afternoon. Emily Dooling (Winthrop, Maine) began the play and passed to Saucier who stopped the ball. Fernandes blasted a high shot that beat Buckley.

Maine outshot UNH 15-4 in the game. Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) made two saves in goal for the Black Bears. She improves to 9-3 on the season. Buckley stopped seven shots for the Wildcats and falls to 1-9.
