Field Hockey Downs Holy Cross 4-1
Oct. 10, 2004
Worcester, Mass.- The University of Maine field hockey team scored two goals in each half to defeat Holy Cross 4-1 in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears improve to 10-4 on the season, while Holy Cross falls to 7-5. Senior forward Traci Rainone (East Greenwich, R.I.) got Maine on the board fourteen minutes into the game when she tipped Meagan Connolly's (Mahopac, N.Y.) blast past Holy Cross keeper Sony Kuhn. Connolly was set up by Katie Flaherty (Winslow, Maine) on a penalty corner and ripped a shot into the crease, which Rainone redirected into the net. The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead into halftime with just 20 seconds remaining in the first, when junior Kasey Spencer (Old Town, Maine) was able to get a stick on Rachael Hilgar's (Barto, Pa.) initial shot during another penalty corner to beat Kuhn just before the half. Maine went up 3-0 less than 10 minutes into the second half when junior Shaunessy Saucier (Old Town, Maine) slipped a shot past Kuhn at the 26:44 mark. Holy Cross sophomore Tara Welch cut the lead to two when she rifled a shot towards the goal beat Maine goalkeeper Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine). The Black Bears rounded out the scoring with 5:14 left when Spencer tallied her second goal of the game after maneuvering around a diving Kuhn, and finding the back of the goal. For Spencer, it was her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Jamie Morin made seven saves in the game to improve to 10-4 on the season. Sony Kuhn made five saves in goal for the Crusaders. The Black Bears return to action on Friday, October 22 when they travel to Vermont to face the Catamounts at 11:00 am.
