Field Hockey Falls to UNH

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine field hockey fell to New Hampshire by the score of 4-3 at the Maine Field Hockey Complex on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Maine goes to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in America East while New Hampshire went to 6-8 and 1-1 in conference. Maine was led by Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) who had a goal and an assist.

Maine took the lead in the first half when Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) found Newton open and she knocked it in past New Hampshire goalie Jenna Lehman (Kingston, Pa.).

After two New Hampshire goals, the Black Bears appeared to tie the game when Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) knocked in a shot into the open net. However, the goal was disallowed as the umpire said she hit the ball with the wrong side of her stick.

Maine would tie the game anyway at the 34-minute mark when Gardiner scored from Newton off a corner play.

New Hampshire was able to take the lead with one second left in the first half on a Sarah Craigue (Concord, N.H.) goal.

Craigue would add another goal 11 minutes into the second half to give the Wildcats a two-goal lead. Maine battled back, cutting the lead in half with just under a minute to play when Jackie D'Amato (Upton, Mass.) deflected in an Ellen Andrews (New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island) shot off a corner play.

The Black Bears continued to play hard, but ran out of time.

Maine outshot UNH 28-to-19. Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) made seven saves in net while Lehman finished with 13. Craigue had three goals for New Hampshire.

The Black Bears return to action tomorrow when they battle Rutgers in Providence, R.I.
