MacDonald Leads Maine Past Dartmouth 1-0
Oct. 16, 2005
HANOVER, N.H.-- Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) notched her seventh goal of the season on a penalty corner to lead the University of Maine field hockey team past Dartmouth 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Hanover, N.H. The Black Bears improve to 10-5 on the season, while Dartmouth falls to 5-7. Neither team was able to score the majority of the first half. Maine was awarded a penalty corner after a flurry of action in front of the cage as time expired in the first half. Joanna Fernandes set the ball and MacDonald tipped the ball past Dartmouth goalie Lauren Balukjian, who made a diving attempt at the ball. For MacDonald, it was her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Dartmouth had several attempts in the second half. Dartmouth's Audrey Knutson got the ball past Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine), but Fernandes was there to make a defensive save and clear the ball off the goal line in the second half. Dartmouth outshot Maine 12-11 in the game. Giroux made four saves in goal for the Black Bears. She improves to 8-4 on the season. The shutout was the second of the season for the sophomore goalie. Balukjian made five saves in goal for the Big Green. The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, October 22 when they travel to UMBC for a 1:00 p.m. game. -U-M-
