Field Hockey Defeats Boston University, 2-1
Oct. 18, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The University of Maine field hockey defeated Boston University by the score of 2-1 in Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Maine improved to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in America East while Boston University fell to 7-8 overall and 2-1 in league play. Maine was led by senior captain Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) who had the winning goal three minutes into the second half. It is the first win for the Black Bears over the Terriers since 2003. Despite being outshot eight-to-two in the first half, Maine and Boston University were tied 0-0 going into the second half courtesy of solid defensive play on the Black Bears' part. In the second half, Maine got on the board two minutes in when Stephanie Gardiner's (Vancouver, British Columbia) shot was redirected by Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) who notched her seventh goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Máire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario) found Emery down the left side and she hit a hard shot that went inside the far post. Despite a Terrier goal with five minutes left, the Black Bears played tough and were able to notch an important win and hand the Terriers their first America East loss of the season. Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) made six saves in net for the Black Bears. It is the first win for the Black Bears over the Terriers since 2003. Maine returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. when the Black Bears travel to take on the Vermont Catamounts.
