Hilgar Leads Maine Field Hockey Past Vermont
Oct. 22, 2004 MIDDLEBURY, Vt.- Rachael Hilgar (Barto, Pa.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the University of Maine field hockey team past Vermont 4-1 on Friday afternoon in Middlebury, Vt. The Black Bears improve to 11-4 on the season with the win and 3-1 in America East conference play, while Vermont falls to 2-14 and 1-4 in conference play. Maine opened the scoring just 2:49 into the game when Amie Dubois (Winslow, Maine) scored off a penalty corner. Dubois tipped in a shot by Joanna Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario). The Black Bear added to their lead when Kasey Spencer (Old Town, Maine) took a pass from Hilgar, who had drawn Vermont goalie Ariel Eber out of her cage. The goal was the team-leading eighth of the year for Spencer. Hilgar scored a pair of second half goals to extend Maine's lead to 4-0. Hilgar tallied her first goal at 37:28 with an assist from Meagan Connolly (Mahopac, N.Y.). Hilgar scored her second of the game and seventh of the season at 49:21 when she beat Eber. Vermont notched its lone goal of the afternoon at 68:08 when Merrie-Beth Maynard scored off a scramble in front of the Maine net. Maine outshot Vermont 18-11 in the game. Maine goalie Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) made five saves as she improves to 11-4-0 on the season. Eber made 10 saves in goal for the Catamounts.
