Field Hockey Downs UMBC on Senior Day

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine field hockey team defeated UMBC 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 7-9 on the season and 3-1 in America East play. UMBC falls to 1-13 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

Maine took a 1-0 lead at 22:29. Erin Reusch (Salem, N.H.) passed the ball near the end line and found Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) on the far post of the goal. MacDonald beat UMBC goalie Ashley Benitz to give the Black Bears the 1-0 lead. For MacDonald, it was her second goal of the season.

Maine took the 1-0 lead into intermission. The Black Bears added to their lead in the second half. Gina Legge (North Harwich, Mass.) scored off a penalty corner at 67:36. Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) started the play and found Katie Flaherty (Winslow, Maine) who set the ball. For Legge, it was her third goal of the season.

Maine dominated the game as it recorded a 23-4 advantage in shots and a 14-3 edge in penalty corners.

Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) made three saves in goal to record her third shutout of the season. She improves to 5-7 on the campaign. Benitz made 13 saves for UMBC and falls to 0-5 on the season.

Before the game, Maine honored seniors Joanna Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario), Kirsten Costa (Harwich, Mass.), Flaherty and Legge.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, October 28 when they travel to Boston University for the regular season finale at 1:00 pm.
