Field Hockey Downs Georgetown in Double Overtime

WASHINGTON, DC- The University of Maine field hockey team defeated Georgetown 1-0 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon in Washington, DC. The Black Bears improve to 12-5 on the season with the win, while the Hoyas fall to 3-11. It was the third straight shutout for Maine. Kasey Spencer (Old Town, Maine) notched the double-overtime game-winner at 98:54 to give the Black Bears the win. It was the seventh goal of the season for Spencer. Maine had a distinct advantage in shots in the game. The Black Bears outshot Georgetown 22-8 in the game. Maine held a 7-1 advanage in the first half, a 7-2 advantage in the second half, a 6-4 edge in the first overtime and a 2-1 margin in the second overtime. It is the fourth overtime game for the Black Bears this season. Maine is 2-2 in those games. Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) made one save in goal for the Black Bears. She improves to 10-4 on the season. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Giroux and third straight. The Black Bears return to Morse Field in Orono, Maine on Sunday, October 30 when they host Boston University at 12:00 noon. Maine currently sits alone atop the America East standings with a perfect 4-0 record in conference play. The Black Bears have earned at least a share of the America East regular season title and will play for the right to host the America East Tournament when they face the Terriers on Sunday afternoon.
