Oct. 26, 2008

Box Score

BURLINGTON, Vt.--The University of Maine field hockey team defeated Vermont by the score of 2-1 in Burlington, Vt. on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Maine improves to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in America East play while Vermont goes to 9-8 overall and 1-3 in league play. Maine was led by Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) who had a goal and an assist.

Maine took the lead in the 28th minute when Gardiner took a shot that was redirected by Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) for her eighth goal of the season.

In the second half, Gardiner scored the winning goal in the 45th minute when Vermont goalie Kristen Heavens tried to kick the ball and clear it, but the ball hit a stick and went straight to Gardiner who notched her seventh goal of the season.

Vermont would cut the lead in half in the 66th minute via a Kim Striegler goal, but Maine goalie Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) played very well in net to preserve the win for the Black Bears.

Maine returns to action on Saturday when the Black Bears host Fairfield on Senior Day at 11:30 a.m. Maine will honor Gigi Niekrash (Madison, Conn.), Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) and Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) before the game for their outstanding careers as Black Bears.
