In the second half, Gardiner scored the winning goal in the 45th minute when Vermont goalie Kristen Heavens tried to kick the ball and clear it, but the ball hit a stick and went straight to Gardiner who notched her seventh goal of the season. Vermont would cut the lead in half in the 66th minute via a Kim Striegler goal, but Maine goalie Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) played very well in net to preserve the win for the Black Bears. Maine returns to action on Saturday when the Black Bears host Fairfield on Senior Day at 11:30 a.m. Maine will honor Gigi Niekrash (Madison, Conn.), Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) and Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) before the game for their outstanding careers as Black Bears.
