Field Hockey Falls to BU 3-1

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Boston University on Sunday afternoon at Morse Field in Orono, Maine. Despite the loss, the Black Bears earn a share of the America East regular season title for the first time in Maine's 17 years in the conference. The Black Bears fall to 12-6 on the season and 4-1 in America East play, while BU, ranked 18th in the latest national poll, improves to 13-5 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. The Terriers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Amy Seaman scored on a scramble in front of the Maine goal cage at 9:40. Sarah Hudak picked up an assist on the goal. For Seaman, it was her fourth goal of the season. BU added to its lead at 29:42. Pam Spuehler found Sarah Shute on the left side of the goal and she tipped in the pass from Spuehler past Maine goalie Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine). For Shute, it was her eighth goal of the season. The Terriers increased their lead to 3-0 with just 1:25 remaining in the half. Lauren Alfaro beat Giroux on a shot from seven yards out. Colleen McClay picked up an assist on the goal for the Terriers. Maine came out of halftime fired up and outshot BU 8-3 in the second half. Kasey Spencer (Old Town, Maine) put Maine on the board with an unassisted tally at 50:37. Maine had a shot from outside the circle. Spencer picked up a free ball from that shot and beat BU goalkeeper Erin Prediger from six yards out. For Spencer, it was her eighth goal of the season which tied her with Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.) for the team lead. The Black Bears had several chances late in the game, but were able to get no closer. Rebecca Giroux made six saves in 35 minutes of action. Maygan Cassarino (Milford, N.H.) played the second half for the Black Bears and made three saves.
Boston University finished with a 13-8 edge in shot on goal and a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. The Black Bears will be the second seed in the upcoming America East Tournament. Maine will play Albany on Friday, November 4 at 2:30 p.m. at Jack Barry Field in Cambridge, Mass. |
