Field Hockey Falls to Colgate in Overtime

ORONO, Maine- Ashley Schneider scored for Colgate just 2:48 into overtime as the Raiders defeated the University of Maine 3-2 in college field hockey action on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears fall to 12-6 on the season, while Colgate improves to 11-7.

Colgate got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when Lauren Remkus scored her third goal of the season. Natalie Plesniarski carried the ball down the right side and Maine goalie Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) came out to play the ball. Plesniarski passed to Remkus who had a wide-open net and capitalized.

Shaunessy Saucier (Old Town, Maine) tied the game at 1-1 at 51:45 when she scored off a scramble in front of the cage. Traci Rainone (East Greenwich, R.I.) assist on the goal for the Black Bears. Sally Mazzocchi gave the Raiders a 2-1 lead when she scored on a penalty stroke at 54:09.

Once again, the Black Bears were able to tie the game. Rachael Hilgar (Barto, Pa.) knotted the game at 2-2 when she tallied her eighth goal of the season at 59:02 from Saucier.

The game remained tied until Schneider won it for the Raiders in overtime. Kath Shelley picked up an assist on the game-winning goal.

Maine outshot Colgate 34-16, including 22-4 in the second half. Morin and Colgate goalie Jacque DeMarco each made some outstanding saves in the game. Morin finished with six saves and falls to 12-6 on the season. DeMarco stopped 13 shots and improves to 11-7.

Before the game, Maine honored seniors Emily Dooling (Winthrop, Maine), Hilgar, Amie Dubois (Winslow, Maine), Liz Mendell (Palmyra, Maine), Rainone and Morin who each played their final home game of their career.

 

 

Maine returns to action when it faces Northeastern in the semifinals of the America East Tournament on Friday, November 5. The game will be played at Jack Barry Field in Cambridge, Mass. at 11:30 a.m.
