Field Hockey Advances To America East Title Game

ORONO, Maine-- Amy Zdrojesky (East Greenville, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal 9:05 into overtime to lead the University of Maine field hockey team past Albany 1-0 in the America East semifinals on Friday afternoon at Jack Barry Field in Cambridge, Mass. The Black Bear advance to the America East Title game for the fourth time in the past five years.

It is the second year in a row that the Black Bears have defeated Albany 1-0 in the America East semifinals. Maine improves to 8-10 with the win, while Albany ends their season with a record of 12-7.

In overtime, Zdrojesky blasted a pass from Katie Flaherty (Winslow, Maine) past Albany keeper Ashley Ross to give Maine the 1-0 victory and propel the Black Bears into the title game.

For Zdrojesky, it was her fourth goal of the season and first game-winner. The assist was the team-leading fifth of the season for Flaherty.

Albany had a 9-6 advantage in shots in the game, including a 5-1 advantage in overtime. Maine keeper Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) was outstanding, making six saves in 79:05 minutes of play. She improves to 6-8 on the season and records her fourth shutout of the season. Ross made four saves for Albany.

Zdrojesky and Gina Legge (North Harwich, Mass.) each had two shots on goal for the Black Bears while Joanna Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario) had one.

The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, November 5 when they face Boston University of the America East Title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The game will be played at 1:00 p.m. at Jack Barry Field in Cambridge, Mass.
