Maine Falls to Boston University in America East Championship Game

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine field hockey team fell to Boston University 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in the America East Championship game. Maine falls to 8-11 on the season. Joanna Fernandes (Mississauga, Ontario) scored the lone goal of the game for the Black Bears. Maine earned conference runner-up honors for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

BU's Hayley Hamada opened the scoring at 22:07 when she redirected a pass into the far right corner. The Terriers took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Maine tied the game at 48:40 when Fernandes scored on a penalty corner with a high shot that deflected off a defender's stick. Katie Flaherty (Winslow, Maine) and Amy Zdrojesky (East Greenville, Pa.) assisted on the goal.

BU took the lead just over three minutes later when Sarah Shute scored her 14th goal of the season which turned out to be the game-winner. Hadley Adams added an insurance goal for the Terriers at 54:55. BU closed out the scoring when Amy Seaman scored at 68:02.

Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine) made four saves in goal for the Black Bears. She falls to 6-9 on the season.

Erin Prediger made one save in goal for the Terriers.

The All-Tournament Team also featured Maine's Katie Flaherty (Winslow, Maine/Winslow), Rebecca Giroux (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and Amy Zdrojesky (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), Albany's Jess Lindsey (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) and Teska Koch (Hilversum, Netherlands/'t Sint Vituscollege, Bussum) and Vermont's Lauren Burke (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Kristen Heavens (Hawinton, Conn./Lewis Mills).
