Field Hockey Picked Fifth in America East Coaches' Poll

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The University of Maine field hockey team has been selected to finish fifth in the 2008 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Thursday. The Black Bears received nine points in a vote of the conferences six head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Head coach Josette Babineau returns 11 letterwinners from a squad that went 5-11 a year ago and 1-4 in America East play. The Black Bears return two of their top three scorers from a year ago in seniors Nicole Emery (Winthrop, Maine) and Kim MacDonald (East Greenwich, R.I.). Emery tallied three goals and four assists for 10 points while MacDonald had three goals and two assists for eight points. Maine also returns three All-America East Rookie Team selections in Brittney Cummings (Belfast, Maine), Máire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario) and Courtney Veinotte (Canaan, Maine). Cummings played in fifteen games and registered an assist at forward. Dineen started all 16 games and was stellar on defense. Veinotte was tied for fourth on the team in scoring with three goals and one assist for seven points. Albany was selected to win the title as it received four first-place votes and 24 points overall. Boston University was second with two first-place votes and 22 points overall. Vermont was third with 16 points followed by New Hampshire with 14 and Maine.
