Jamie Morin Named America East Player of the Week
Sept. 21, 2004 ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine field hockey goalie Jamie Morin (Winslow, Maine) was named the America East Player of the Week after leading the Black Bears to two wins last week. In addition, Maine is ranked 20th in the nation in the latest 2004 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, September 21. Morin continued her impressive season as she went 2-1 last week. She recorded a 2-1 win over Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon and then shut out 16th ranked Harvard 2-0 on Sunday to hand the Crimson their first loss of the season. The lone loss on the week was a 1-0 defeat to UMass. Morin made nine saves in a double overtime win over Dartmouth and followed that up with four saves against Harvard for her third shutout of the season. She ranks sixth in the country with a .821 save percentage and is 14th in goals against average at 1.18. Maine continues to be impressive as a team as the Black Bears have played one of the most competitive schedules in Maine history this season with several games against some of the top teams in the country. Maine opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Ohio State in a game that went to sudden death penalty strokes. The Black Bears dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime decision to Michigan, a team that is currently ranked seventh in the nation. Last Saturday, the Black Bears shut out previously undefeated Harvard 2-0. The Crimson are 18th in the nation with a record of 4-1. Maine's schedule continues to be challenging entering America East play. The Black Bears travel to Boston University on October 9 for a game with the Terriers, who are currently receiving votes in the national poll. The Black Bears host 11th ranked Northeastern on October 30. Maine has faced Northeastern in each of the last two America East Championship games. "We are thrilled with the success that we are having and the national recognition," said UMaine head coach Terry Kix. "Our hope is that we can continue to compete at a high level of play." The Black Bears are ranked 12th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 1.18 goals per game. Maine is 18th in winning percentage, having won 67.7 percent of their games. The Black Bears start a three-game home stand this weekend when they host UMBC for their first America East game on Friday, September 24 at 5:00 p.m. on Morse Field at Alfond Stadium. Maine will then face the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. For more information on Maine field hockey or Black Bear athletics visit www.GoBlackBears.com.
