Kelly Newton Named America East Field Hockey Rookie of the Week

ORONO, Maine--University of Maine field hockey freshman forward Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday. Newton had a nine-point weekend in games against Bryant and Quinnipiac. This is the second time that Newton has been honored with the Rookie of the Week Award as she was named the first recipient of the season on Sept. 2. Newton had three goals and two assists for an eight-point effort in Maine's win against Bryant on Saturday. She added an assist in the Black Bears' game against Quinnipiac on Sunday. Maine has now received three out of the first four Rookie of the Week Awards with Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) earning the award last week. Newton leads Maine and is second in America East with 13 points on the season. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday when they travel to take on the Providence College Friars at 1 p.m. -U-M-
