Stephanie Gardiner Captures Third America East Rookie of the Week Award

Nov. 3, 2008

ORONO, Maine--For the second consecutive week, University of Maine field hockey freshman forward Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) has been named the America East Rookie of the Week. Gardiner scored the eventual game-winning goal in a win over Fairfield that clinched a spot in the America East Tournament for Maine. It is the third weekly award for Gardiner this season.

Gardiner is currently second on the team and in America East with nine points in league play. Gardiner and teammate Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) are tied for the team lead in goals with eight, and tied for third in conference play with three goals apiece.

University of Maine freshmen have now won six of the 10 America East Rookie of the Week Awards. Along with Gardiner's three awards, Newton has won two and goalie Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) has been honored with one award.

The field hockey team returns to action on Friday at 4 p.m. when the Black Bears play New Hampshire in the America East semi-finals hosted by the University at Albany. Should the Black Bears down New Hampshire, they would play either Albany or Boston University in the championship game on Sunday.
