Kelly Newton Named America East Rookie of the Year

ALBANY, N.Y.--University of Maine field hockey freshman Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) was honored as the 2008 America East Rookie of the Year in addition to being named to the America East First Team at the America East banquet on Thursday evening in Albany, N.Y. In addition, Máire Dineen (Toronto, Ontario) was also named to the All-America East First Team while freshman Stephanie Gardiner (Vancouver, British Columbia) was named to the All-America East Second Team. Gardiner and Newton were also unanimous selections to the All-Rookie Team.

Newton, a forward, leads the team and is fourth in America East with 23 points in 14 games this season. She won America East Rookie of the Week Honors twice and had six multiple-point games this season.

Dineen was outstanding at the center midfield position this season, tying for first in league play with four assists in five games. Dineen was very active on the defensive end and in springing attacks up field. The sophomore has three goals and five assists overall for 11 points, which is third on the team this season.

Gardiner was a force at the forward position all season long. She was a three-time recipient of the America East Rookie of the Week Award and was second on the team and sixth in conference with 21 points overall.

The last University of Maine freshman to garner Rookie of the Year honors was Cindy Botett in 1995.

The field hockey team plays New Hampshire in the America East Semi-finals tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Albany, N.Y. Should the Black Bears win, they would play either Albany or Boston University in the America East Final at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
