Women's Ice Hockey Falls 3-1 At New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team was defeated 3-1 by the third-ranked University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center. Freshman Amy Stech scored the lone goal for Maine. New Hampshire improves to 17-2-3 overall and first place in the Hockey East standings with an 9-1-0 league record. Maine fell to 6-12-2, 1-7-2 in Hockey East.

In the first period, Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) stopped all 17 shots faced. Maine was only able to generate four shots, but entered the second period with the game tied 0-0.

New Hampshire scored three goals in a five-minute span of the second period. The Wildcats first goal came at 7:34 when Kelly Patton scored with an assist from Sam Faber. Ninety seconds later, New Hampshire took a 2-0 lead when Jennifer Hitchcock scored apower play goal with assists from Sam Faber and Kacey Bellamy at 9:06. At 12:06, Kelly Patton scored her second goal of the night with an assist from Sam Faber to take a 3-0 lead. Maine was outshot 19 to one in the period, with Vanessa Vani (St. Catherines, Ontario) taking the only shot for the Black Bears.

The Black Bears picked up the offense some in the third period, getting seven shots on net. Maine scored their first goal at 7:23 in the third when Amy Stech (Duluth, Minn.) scored with an assist from Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec).

Maine goalie Genevieve Turgeon recorded 46 saves in the game, giving her 98 saves in the two-game series at New Hampshire. New Hampshire goalie Lucy Schoedel had 11 saves and one goal against. The Black Bears were 0-6 on the power play, while the Wildcats were 1-6. Maine and New Hampshire were both called for six penalties for twelve minutes.

 

 

Maine will return home to Alfond Arena next Saturday at 12:00 pm as they face Vermont. The game will also be a Hockey East Hannaford Kids Club event, with a post-game autograph session. Maine travels to Providence next Sunday to play the Friars at 4:00 pm.
