Jan. 21, 2005

Box Score

STORRS, Conn. (January 21, 2005) - Maine brought loads of fire power to their Friday night game against the Connecticut Huskies, recording 30 shots on target. The Black Bears were unable to rattle junior goaltender Kaitlyn Shain as she stopped 29 of the 30 shots. UConn was able to muster 15 shots on goal, but came out on top in Hockey East action with a score of 4-1 at Freitas Ice Forum. The Black Bears fall to 11-7-3 overall and 2-5-2 in conference games while UConn improves to 7-9-5 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.

Jacquelyn McGuire put the Huskies up early with a goal just 30 seconds into the game. McGuire redirected a slap shot by Liz Gallinaro to put UConn up 1-0. Megan McLeod was awarded the second assist.

UConn doubled its lead when Jennifer Houlden fired a one-timer at 13:29 from the top of the circle past Maine goaltender Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, New York). Despite outshooting the Huskies five to four, the period ended with Maine down 2-0.

The Black Bears came out firing in the second period, cutting the UConn lead to one at 4:59. Junior forward Andrea Steranko (Regina, Saskatchewan) scored with assists from linemates Tristan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta) and Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) to move the score to 2-1. Steranko scored her sixth goal of the year and now has 17 points on the year (6 goals, 11 assists), Desmet added to her team leading 20 points (11 goals, 9 assists) with the assist, with White close behind with 18 points (12 goals, 6 assists) after being credited with the second assist.

Maine dominated play and recorded 16 shots in the second period, but Steranko's goal was all that UConn goaltender Shain would give up. The Black Bears had four power player opportunities in the second period, but couldn't get past Shain.

Slightly over a minute before the second intermission, Tiffany Owens increased the Huskies' lead to 3-1. While on the penalty kill, Owens intercepted a pass at the red line and pushed the puck up the ice for a shorthanded breakaway goal.

The goal was just one of three UConn shots on net for the period. Through two periods, the Huskies scored three goals on just seven shots while holding Maine to one goal on 22 shots.

UConn forward Leslie Hurlburt put the game away with a power play goal at 10:55 in the third period. Hurlburt tipped the Alicia Ramolla shot to increase the UConn lead to 4-1. Brittany Chandler earned an assist on the play.

For the game, Maine out-shot Connecticut 30-15. Fourteen of Shain's 29 saves were on the power play. Maine went 0-7 on the power play while UConn was 1-4.

Maine will look to rebound on Saturday, January 22 when the weekend series concludes with a 4:00 p.m. game at the Freitas Ice Forum on the Storrs campus.
