Women's Ice Hockey Loses on the Road, 5-1

STORRS, Conn. (February 4, 2006) - Despite outshooting UConn 20-19, the University of Maine women's ice hockey team lost 5-1 on Saturday afternoon in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. Junior forward Brigitte Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec) scored Maine's lone goal and continues to lead the team in scoring with 13 goals and 10 assists (23 points). With the loss Maine is now 12-6-6 overall and 4-6-4 against league opponents and the Huskies improve to 11-16-1 overall and 9-6-0 in Hockey East play. UConn got on the board first when junior Natalie Vibert connected off passes from Hawkins and junior Alicia Ramolla 5:51 into the first period on a power play goal. The Black Bears answered at the 16:42 point on a goal from Brigitte Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec). Defenseman Kim Meagher (Hampden, Maine) registered her seventh assist on the year while freshman forward Patricia Gagnon (Mont-Joli, Quebec) tallied her fourth assist on the year on Laflammes team leading 13th goal. The game-winner came in the early moments of the second period, as junior Katherine Van Deveire scored the Huskies second goal of the game 5:26 into the stanza. She was assisted by Hawkins and freshman Kristen Russell on the goal. Van Deveire and Hawkins teamed up again later in the period, as Van Deveire tallied her second goal of the game at the 15:22 point off of a pass from Hawkins. UConn was shorthanded at the time of the score. Hawkins got in on the scoring action herself to open the third period, picking up her team-leading 12th goal of the season just 28 seconds into the stanza scoring on the second short-handed goal of the game. Sophomore Liz Gallinaro wrapped up the UConn offense at the 11:03 mark in the closing period, scoring on the power play. Sophomore Bridget King and senior Janelle Armitage assisted on the goal.
For the game, Maine out-shot UConn, 20-19. The Huskies were 2-for-6 on the power play while the Black Bears were 0-for-5 with the man advantage. Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) falls to 6-5-4 on the season making 14 saves in the loss. Senior Kaitlyn Shain had 19 saves in goal for the Huskies. The two teams will close out the season series on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. |
