Providence Tops Black Bears 4-1
Feb. 6, 2005 The No. 10 Providence College women's ice hockey team topped Maine, 4-1, on Sunday, February 6 at the Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Maine drops to 3-7-2 in conference play and 12-9-3 overall while the Friars improve to 15-7-4 overall and remain in first place in the Hockey East with a 10-1-1 record. Despite outshooting the Friars in the first two periods, the Black Bears found themselves down 3-0. Maine outshot Providence 9 to 6 in the first period, and 14 to 10 in the second period. Sophomore Sonny Watrous opened up the Friar offense with her 17th goal of the seaon at 8:18 of the first period. Junior Karen Thatcher assisted on the play. Freshman Rachel Crissy scored the second goal at 14:38 of the first period with a pass from senior Emily Gryp. In the second period, the Friars scored a power play goal credited to senior Hilary Greaves. Crissy and senior captain Danielle Bourgette assisted on the play. The Black Bears responded at 5:13 of the third period to bring the score to 3-1 with a goal by senior forward Andrea Steranko (Regina, Saskatchewan) assisted by junior forward Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) and senior captain Tristan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta). Steranko nets her eighth goal of the year with White getting her seventh assist and Desmet adding her 11th on the year. Maine pulled sophomore goaltender Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, New York) to get an extra attacker in the last minute of play to try to pull within one, but gave up an empty net goal. Greaves scored her second goal of the night at 19:46 of the third period assisted by defensemen Kristin Gigliotti and freshman Kathleen Smith. Maine outshot the Friars 31 to 27. Gettings recorded 23 saves on 27 shots while the Friars' Amy Thomas posted a game-high 30 saves on 31 shots.
