![]() Women's Ice Hockey Wins 3-1 At Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team picked up a 3-1 win at Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Black Bears had two goals by Kate Sunstrum and one by Robyn Law, while Genevieve Turgeon had 19 saves in the win. Maine is now 8-17-2 overall and 3-12-2 in Hockey East play, while Vermont is 3-22-2 and 1-14-1 in conference play. The Black Bears were on the power play less than two minutes into the game, but did not get a shot on net. On the next power play chance, Kate Sunstrum (London, Ontario) scored for Maine. She was assisted by Brigitte Laflamme (St.-Augustin, Quebec) and Elyce Thomas (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) on the power play goal at 7:36. With under two minutes to go in the first period, Elyce Thomas hit the post. Maine led six to five on shots in the period. Maine took the first three shots of the second period, but things quickly evened up. Vermont had their first power play of the game beginning at 8:40 in the second period, but could not capitalize on the advantage. Maine took a 2-0 lead when Robyn Law (Markham, Ontario) scored at 11:55 after her point blank shot hit Vermont goalie Jenilee Roy in the shoulder before ricocheting off the cross bar and into the goal. Law was assisted on the goal by Vanessa Vani (St. Catherines, Ontario). The Black Bears had a third power play chance begin with under a minute to go in the second period. Just 52 seconds into the third period, Maine took a 3-0 lead when Kate Sunstrum scored. She was assisted by Jenna Cowan (Hartney, Manitoba) and Brigette Laflamme on the Black Bears' second power play goal of the game. At 16:24 in the third period, the Catamounts got on the board when Jackie Thode scored with an assist from Chelsea Furlani.
In goal, Maine's Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) had 19 saves and one goal against. For Vermont, Jenilee Roy had 22 saves with three goals against. Maine had two penalties for four minutes and Vermont had five penalties for ten minutes. On power plays, Maine was 2-5 and Vermont was 0-2. The Maine outshot Vermont 25 to 20. Maine will complete the two-game series at Vermont at 2:00 pm on Sunday. The final home series will be February 17 and 18 against Boston University.
