Women's Ice Hockey Powers Past Vermont, 7-0

Maine started the game strong with a three-goal period. Defenseman Julie Poulin (Beauceville, Quebec) opened the scoring for the Black Bears as she netted her seventh goal of the season 3:13 into the period. Brigitte Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec) and Patricia Gagnon (Mont-Joli, Quebec) set Poulin up on the goal. The Black Bears then scored two goals in a 23 second time span to increase their lead to 3-0. Senior captain Cheryl White scored her first of two goals on the afternoon with with assists fromKatie Sunstrum (London, Ontario) and Vanessa Vani (St. Catherine's, Ontario). Gagnon scored her second power play goal and her sixth of the season with Laflamme and Kelly Law (Markham, Ontario) recording her team high 17th assist. Maine's defense held the Catamounts to two shots in the period.

The second period was filled with penalties and two more goals for the Black Bears. Vermont was called for six penalties with Maine facing four including an early 5 on 3 disadvantage, but kept the Catamounts off the scoreboard. White scored her second goal of the afternoon and 12th goal of the season with just over 3 minutes remaining in the second stanza. Vani tallied her second of three assists on the afternoon to increase Maine's lead, 4-0. Defenseman Kim Meagher (Hampden, Maine) scored the fifth goal of the game with an assist from Amy Quirion (South Glenn Falls, NY) who recorded her third assist this season. The Black Bear defense remained stingy allowing just two shots on goal again in the second period.

Maine added two more goals in the third period to defeat the visiting Catamounts 7-0. Law netted Maine's second power play goal and her sixth of the season with just nine minutes remaining in the final stanza. Poulin recorded her 17th assist on Law's goal and is now tied with Law for most assists this season. Vani tallied her 10th assist of the season and her third of the game on the power play goal. Quirion closed out the scoring for the Black Bears with 1:29 to play in the game with assists from Jenna Cowan (Hartney, Manitoba) and Kim MacElhaney (Andover, Mass.).

 

 

Freshman goaltender Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) made 8 saves on the afternoon to improve to 7-5-4 on the year. Vermont's Jenilee Roy and Katie Nichols combined to make 21 saves on the afternoon.

With the win Maine improves to 14-6-6 (6-6-4 HE) and pick up two Hockey East conference points while the Catamounts continue to struggle and fall to 3-24-2 (1-14-1 HE) on the year. Maine and Vermont will face-off again at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12 at Alfond Arena.
