![]() Women's Ice Hockey Sweeps Catamounts With 3-0 Win
Feb. 12, 2006 The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team needed a sweep of Vermont this weekend and a little help from the Boston College Eagles in their quest for the final spot in the playoffs. The Black Bears did their part on Sunday afternoon and completed the sweep of the Catamounts with a 3-0 win. The line of senior captain Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba), Vanessa Vani (St. Catherine's, Ontario), and Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) scored all three goals and helped the Black Bears earn two more Hockey East points. White netted her 13th and 14th goals of the season with Vani chipping in two assists and Corriveau scoring her 10th of the season. UConn lost 4-0 to the Eagles last night to set up a great playoff race. Maine started the game strong scoring two goals in the first period to lead at the intermission after a penalty-free period. White opened up the scoring 8:30 into the first period when Vani and Katie Sunstrum (London, Ontario) connected on an even-strength goal. With just under two minutes to play, Corriveau netted her 10th of the season on a great pass play from Brigitte Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec) and Patricia Gagnon (Mont-Joli, Quebec). Laflamme earns her 14th assist on the year with Gagnon tallying her seventh this season. Freshman goaltender Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) made four saves in the stanza. Both teams spent time in the penalty box in the second period as Maine was called for three infractions including two back-to-back penalties. The Catamounts found themselves killing two penalties. Shots were even at nine apiece with neither team able to "light the lamp."
The Black Bears dominated the third period outshooting the Catamounts 15 to 4. The Catamounts were able to keep the Black Bears off the scoreboard until the 17:54 minute mark when White tallied her second of the game. Vani recorded her second assist of the afternoon and fifth of the weekend when she tipped the puck to White who buried it past Catamount goaltender Katie Nichols. Turgeon earned her fourth shutout on the year making 17 saves in her eighth win of the season. Nichols drops to 0-12-1 on the season making 29 saves. Maine heads to Boston University for an away series next weekend then hosts the Boston College Eagles in their home season finale. |
