Women's Ice Hockey Falls to UConn 7-2

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey team dropped a 7-2 decision Saturday afternoon against Connecticut. Maine fell to 4-24-3 and 3-12-3 in Hockey East while UConn improved to 21-5-5 and 12-3-3 in Hockey East.

In the first period, Connecticut got on the board first. At 5:09 into the period, Dominique Thibault scored on the power play from linemate Jaclyn Hawkins for her 21st of the year. Maine pulled even at 8:21 when freshman Jennie Gallo scored a power play goal of her own. Robyn Law and Vanessa Vani assisted on Gallo's team-leading seventh goal of the season. Freshman Jordan Colliton put Maine in the lead with 6:16 remaining. Abby Barton and Pam Patterson assisted on Colliton's second goal of the season. Maine finished the period ahead 2-1. UConn outshot Maine in the period 14-11.

In the second period, Connecticut pulled back in front. Jennifer Chiasson scored her fifth goal of the season at 4:27 into the period. The goal was unassisted. Amy Hollstein scored the eventual game winning goal with 2:32 remaining. Nicole Tritter assisted on Hollstein's 10th goal of the season. The period finished with UConn ahead 3-2. The Huskies outshot the Black Bears 15-5 in the period.

In the third period, the Huskies pulled ahead. Nicole Tritter got a goal of her own 7:18 into the period. Brittany Murphy assisted on Tritter's 11th goal of the season. Brittany Murphy followed that with a goal at 10:15 into the period. Amy Hollstein assisted on Murphy's fourth of the season. Dominique Thibault got her second of the game with 2:34 remaining. Jody Sydor assisted on Thibault's 22nd of the year. Brianna Uliasz topped off the scoring with 27 seconds with her third goal of the year. Lauren Brozowski assisted on the goal. The Huskies outshot Maine in the period 12-6.

 

 

Maine goaltender Genevieve Turgeon totalled 34 saves in the game. Starting Connecticut goaltender Jennie Bellonio tallied 9 saves while Brittany Wilson totaled 11 saves in relief. Turgeon went to 4-17-3 on the season while Wilson went to 15-4-4. Maine was 1-for-5 on the power play while Connecticut went 1-for-3.

Maine will play UConn again tomorrow before returning home next weekend to face Vermont for the final two games of the season.
