Black Bears Fall Short at Boston College, 5-2

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team lost 5-2 today at Kelley Rink to the Boston College Eagles. The win moves the Eagles three points ahead of the Black Bears for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Hockey East standings. In the opening period, BC (10-17-4, 6-9-3) got on the board first. With a man advantage at 7:45 Michelle Lombardi picked up the loose puck against the boards in Maine's zone. Lombardi found an open Jill McInnis who skated in and beat Maine's goalie Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, New York). Krystal Strassman also assisted on the score. Maine (14-13-3, 5-11-2) evened the score at 9:20 with a power-play goal of its own. Andrea Steranko (Regina, Saskatchewan) scored off a pass from Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Norand, Quebec) for her 10th goal of the year. At 19:03 Deborah Spillane gave BC the lead. From behind the net Cristin Stuart passed to McInnis who put a shot on goal. Spillane picked up the rebound and beat Gettings top-shelf. Stuart and McInnis earn their sixth and fourth assist of the season, respectively. BC goalie Alison Quandt stopped 12 shots in the first. The Black Bears headed into the first intermission down 2-1. In the middle stanza, the Eagles extended their lead. At 10:41 Colleen Harris netted her eighth goal of the season off a pass from Stuart and Sarah Carlson. The Black Bears came within one with a shorthanded tally at 15:15. Sophomore center Brigitte Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec) scored off a pass from senior Steranko. Lombardi gave BC a two-goal advantage at 18:04. On the power play Sarah Courtney picked up the puck in the corner and dished it to Lombardi. The sophomore blasted a shot by Gettings' glove side for her fourth goal of the season.
The Eagles held the Black Bears scoreless on their two power-play chances in the second. After two periods of play, Maine out-shot BC 21-12. The Eagles added to their lead in the third. Harris notched her second goal of the game at 5:27 off a pass from Stuart and Lee-J Mirasolo. Quandt continued to shut down the Black Bears in the final frame. The junior stopped all 14 shots she faced in the period. The Eagles were forced in a 3-on-5 situation late in the third after two penalties were called on Strassman and Kim Meagher. BC killed both penalties and Quandt made a glove save to hold off Maine in the final minutes. BC finished the day 3-for-7 on its power-play chances and held Maine to 1-for-7 on its opportunities. Quandt stopped 33 shots for the Eagles, while Gettings made 11 saves for the Black Bears. Maine will play a home-and-home series with the University of Connectiuct next weekend while BC plays New Hampshire at home. |
