Black Bears Fall in Season Finale, 4-1
March 5, 2005
Orono, Maine - Maine (14-15-3, 5-13-2 HE) closed out the 2004-2005 season with a 4-1 loss to the visiting UConn Huskies (15-11-8, 11-5-4 HE) on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena. Maine continued its trend of dominating in the shot department and not getting results. The Black Bears outshot the Huskies in each period and more than doubled UConn in shots with the final count 38 to 15. UConn used a two-goal second period to edge the Black Bears. Senior captain Tristan Desmet scored Maine's lone goal and the last of her illustrious career. Desmet finishes the season with a team-leading 17 goals. The Black Bears outshot the Huskies 14 to 2 in the first stanza yet trailed 1-0 at the intermission. Leslie Hurlburt put UConn on the board 1:36 into the period when defenseman Caitlin Salazer-Reid sent Hurlburt in on a one-on-one with sophomore goaltender Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, N.Y.). The Black Bears were unlucky twice when both junior defenseman Morgan Janusc (Dundas, Ontario) and sophomore forward Kate Sunstrum (London, Ontario) hit the post. Maine went 0-4 on the power play while UConn went 0-1. Coach Guy Perron's intermission speech must have triggered something in the Black Bears as they came out and scored 14 seconds into the second period to tie the game, 1-1. Senior captain Tristan Desmet notched her team leading 17th goal of the year with an assist from linemate Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba). A few minutes later, UConn's Jaclyn Hawkins answered with her third goal of the weekend to retake the lead off an assist from Tiffany Owens and Shannon Connolly. Natalie Vibert increased the UConn cushion to two goals with her second of the weekend. Hawkins tallied one of her two assists on the play. At the end of two periods, Maine trailed 3-1 despite outshooting UConn 8 to 5 in the period and 22 to 7 in the game. Maine did a great job killing four penalties to stay in the game.
With 17 minutes to play in the third period, UConn added a power play goal to ice the game and take a 4-1 lead. Katherin Van Deveriere scored off an assist from Hawkins who added her third point of the game. The Black Bears went 0-4 on the power play while UConn 1 for 7. Maine doubled UConn 16 to 8 in shots but could not get past UConn goaltender Kaitlyn Shain who had another outstanding game for the Huskies. Shain made 37 saves on 38 shots to improve to 11-7-4 on the year while Gettings made 10 saves on 14 shots faced and ends her season 14-15-2. |
