Oct. 26, 2008
Providence, R.I. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell 4-2 to Providence College on Sunday afternoon. Maine drops to 2-6-0 and 0-2-0 in Hockey East while the Friars improve to 3-5-0 and 2-2-0. Ashley Norum (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Jessica Bond (Namur, Quebec) each scored to lead the Black Bears. Maine got down early, allowing two power play goals in a span of two minutes during the first period. Providence continued to press its offense as they notched two more goals over the final two periods, putting up 51 shots on goal in the game. The Black Bears finally found their stride late in the third period as Norum connected on a Vanessa Vani (St. Catharines, Ont.) pass for her first career goal. In just over two minutes later, Maine scored again when Jordan Colliton (Blackie, Alberta) set up Bond for her first career goal as well. The offensive spark proved to be too late as the Black Bears ultimately fell 4-2. Vani's assist gives her 50 for her career and now puts her only four away from tying Maine's all-time record of 54. The Black Bears now have 11 power play goals this season, tying their total from 2007-08. Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) stopped 47 shots but still suffered the loss, falling to 1-6-0 for the season. Maine has time to regroup as they do not return to the ice until Saturday, November 8, when they travel Connecticut to take on UConn at 1 pm.
