Box Score

The Maine Black Bear women's ice hockey team skated to a 4-3 overtime win on Sunday over visiting Wayne State University at Alfond Arena. Danielle Tangredi (London, Ontario) scored the game winning goal to lift the Black Bear's to a 3-1-1 record on the year. Maine dominated the overtime period from the face-off. Freshman forward Abby Krause (Moorhead, Minnesota) skated past two Warrior defenders and put a shot on net that was saved, but popped out to an alert Tangredi who put the game away.

In the first period, Maine found themselves down four minutes into the period after a goal by Laura Monk that was assisted by Emily McGrath-Agg. Senior captain Tristan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta) evened the score with a goal assisted by senior forward Andrea Steranko (Regina, Saskatchewan) and sophomore defenseman Karine Senecal (Montreal, Quebec) eight minutes later. Wayne State answered with a goal by Jessica Snelgrove assisted by Heidi Burns to lead 2-1 after a period of play.

Maine struck twice in the second period to lead 3-2 on goals by Steranko and sophomore forward Kate Sunstrum (London, Ontario). Junior assistant Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) and Senecal recorded assists on Steranko's goal, while Sunstrum's goal was assisted by sophomore forwards Brigitte Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec) and Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec). Maine took the lead and shot advantage into the locker room. Maine outshot the Warriors in the first two periods 33 to 13.

Wayne State was determined not go home with a sweep and came out flying in the third period. Leading scorer Kelly Zamora scored a power play goal to tie the game with assists from Laura Monk and Peyton Patterson. The game would end deadlocked before Tangredi sealed the win for the Black Bears.

Sophomore goaltender Rachel Gettings (Watervliet, New York) made several diving saves to keep the Black Bears in the game. Gettings saved a breakaway, made a key stick save with a few minutes left in the game and made and incredible glove save to keep the Warriors out of the net.

Maine has won the last eight games between the two teams holding a 44-12 goal advantage. With the win, Maine improves to 3-1-1 on the year and Wayne State drops to 3-5-2. Maine faces Boston College in a pair of games next Saturday, November 15th and Sunday, November 16th with both games starting at 1:00pm.
