Women's Hockey Falls to UConn 5-2

Nov. 8, 2008

Box Score

Storrs, Conn. - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Maine falls to 2-7-0 overall and 0-3-0 in Hockey East. The Huskies improve to 6-3-2 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play. The Black Bears were led by Jennie Gallo (Castlegar, B.C.) who scored two goals, giving her five for the season.

UConn struck first, scoring seven minutes into the first period on Dominique Thibault's 11th goal of the season. Maine responded when Gallo connected on a Jenna Ouellette (Winnipeg, Manitoba) pass to tie the game up only 41 seconds later. In the second period the Black Bears found themselves down by one again and Ouellette set up another Gallo goal to knot the game once more at 2-2. Then, with only 11 seconds remaining in the second period, the Huskies scored a power play goal that shifted the momentum into their favor permanently. UConn scored two more unanswered goals in the third as they skated to a 5-2 final score.

Gallo's two goals were her first since her hat-trick on Saturday, Oct. 18, against Sacred Heart and give her the team lead with five. Ouellette's two assists give her the second most with five, only two behind Vanessa Vani (St. Catharines, Ontario) who has seven assists.

Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) made 36 saves, weathering eight of nine Huskies power plays, but falls to 1-7-0 for the season.

Maine laces up the skates once more this weekend as they travel to Northeastern on Sunday, Nov. 9, to take on a different kind of Huskies. The puck drops at 2 pm.
