PLAYOFF RACE - With little fanfare, the University of Maine Black Bears have pulled even with UConn in the playoff race and claim both the tiebreaker advantage and a slightly easier remaining schedule. A sweep against Vermont gave Maine four points in the standings, placing them in a dead heat with UConn for the fourth and final playoff berth in Hockey East. The Black Bears were led by Cheryl White, who notched two goals in each game, and Genevieve Turgeon, who needed to stop just 25 shots over the two contests to record back-to-back shutouts. Rookie Vanessa Vani set up five of Maine' s 10 goals on the weekend. UConn had just one game on the week and was taken out 4-0 by Boston College.

SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS: Maine powered past Vermont 7-0 in the first game of the series and tied a school record of most goals scored against a Hockey East opponent. Earlier this season, Maine defeated Boston University 7-0 to set the record.

Seven Black Bears recorded multi-point efforts in the 7-0 win. Defenseman Julie Poulin (Beauceville, Quebec) opened the scoring for the Black Bears and tallied her team-high 17th assist with Vanessa Vani (St. Catherine's, Ontario) chipping in three assists, and senior captain Cheryl White recording two goals. Kelly Law (Markham, Ontario) scored a goal and tallied her team high 17th assist with Brigitte Laflamme (St. Augustin, Quebec) adding two assists, Amy Quirion (South Glenn Falls, NY) scored a goal and added an assist, and Patricia Gagnon (Mont-Joli, Quebec) scored her sixth of the season and added an assist.

The Black Bears completed the sweep of the Catamounts with a 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon. The line of senior captain Cheryl White (Portage la Prairie, Manitoba), Vanessa Vani (St. Catherine's, Ontario), and Sonia Corriveau (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) scored all three goals in the win. White netted her 13th and 14th goals of the season with Vani chipping in two assists and Corriveau scoring her 10th of the season.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS: The Boston University women's hockey team won its first Beanpot game since 1988, defeating Northeastern University, 3-1, at Harvard's Bright Hockey Center in the consolation round of the 28th Women's Beanpot on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Freshman Gina Kearns (Norwood, Pa.) scored a break away goal for the game-winner and freshman Karilyn Pilch (Salem, N.H.) made 26 saves to earn her third win of the season. Freshmen Laurel Koller (St. Paul, Minn.) and Nicki Wiart (Queensbury, N.Y.) each added a goal and an assist for the Terriers.

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Boston University, 6-1, on Saturday, February 11, at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. With the win, Providence improves to 16-9-4 overall and 10-4-2 in HOCKEY EAST standings. Junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) reached the 100-point century club while senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) earned century club status in the assists department.

WHITE MOVES INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: With the four goal weekend, White has now moved to fifth place in the Black Bear record book in career goals with 35. Karen Droog (00-04) has 74 followed by Meagan Arts (00-04) with 61 and Raffi Wolf (98-03) who has 55 career goals, and Tristan Desmet (01-05) and Alison Lorenz (97-00) both have 45 career goals.

White also holds the fifth place spot in career assists with 38 and is third in career games played (126), one behind Meagan Aarts (127) and four behind leader Tristan Desmet (130). With four games remaining, White should tie Desmet for the overall career games played leader. The career assist leader is Kira Misikowetz (98-00) with 56, Meagan Aarts (00-04) has 55 followed by Kelly Nelson (98-02) with 44 and Karen Droog (00-04) with 41.

Maine will face the Terriers on Saturday and Sunday with both games starting at 3:00 p.m. Maine will then host Boston College next weekend in their season home finale before playoffs.
